New Research: Changes In Gut Bacteria Related To Chronic Pain
New research from the 2018 World Congress on Pain: An imbalance in your gut bacteria can contribute to chronic pain. The study subjects with low diversity in their gut bacteria were found to have higher pain scores. Certain “good” bacteria were low in patients with higher levels of pain. Did the pain cause the changes in gut bacteria or did the altered gut bacteria cause the chronic pain? Whatever the answer, this is an exciting step toward treating chronic pain. Heal the gut, decrease the pain. I see this result frequently in my patients. My colleagues in integrative and functional medicine would likely agree with my observations. Fantastic to see the research being done to change the way chronic pain will be treated in traditional medicine in the future.
