A New Take On Health

Dr. Burkhart is the only physician in the U.S. who is also a registered dietitian and board-certified in integrative medicine. She approaches problems from a unique perspective using traditional medicine, nutrition, and integrative medicine. When asked what she does for a living, she often replies, ” In my office, I help people struggling for answers, as well as those looking for a different type of health care. Outside of the office, I write about topics that address health in ways others may not have.”

Areas Of Special Interest

Gut Health / Chronic Digestive Problems

Bloating, reflux/heartburn, nausea and other chronic stomach problems can be challenging. Gut health affects immune function, mental health, weight control, heart health and more.

SIBO

Stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. It causes bloating, fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms. It often goes undiagnosed and is increasingly common. It can also accompany histamine intolerance

Celiac Disease

Dr. Burkhart is an expert on celiac disease, an autoimmune condition affecting 1 in 100 people. If affected, eating gluten causes long term health complications. Eighty percent of people with celiac disease do not know they have it. Click here for a free article to take to your provider to educate them on celiac disease.

Gluten Sensitivity

Dr. Burkhart is a specialist in gluten-related disorders. These occur in people who don’t have celiac disease but get sick from eating gluten. These are even more common than celiac disease. A free article I wrote can be printed and taken to your provider to educate them on gluten sensitivity and other gluten/wheat-related disorders.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Prolonged episodes of diarrhea and/or constipation are often labeled as IBS. There is frequently an undiagnosed, underlying reason for these ongoing symptoms.

Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance (HIT) is a condition that many feel is underrecognized. For those suffering from HIT, the low histamine diet is the primary treatment. The low histamine diet is being used to treat problems such as rashes, headaches, bloating, and long-haul COVID-19 symptoms.

Okay, I have a little history regarding Dr Fong and Intermittent fasting, and the drink diet of the 1980's my aunt was on like Oprah. 1. Dr Fong did a short term study and in his book admitted that while the "diet" did help some (roughly 20%), it also propagated eating disorder like behavior. In the long term study the diabetes he claimed it would "cure", didn't. It seemed to work more for men (hormone related loss) than it did for women. And most folks found that after 'going off the diet' they gained their weight back and more. The intended eating idea of prolonged fasting unfortunately can cause binging and purging. 2. The liquid diet that Oprah was involved with in 1988 was an extreme diet that few if anyone could remain on for any length of time. According to the New York Times that featured this diet, found this: "Attention has been focused on these diets in the past week after Oprah Winfrey disclosed on her television talk show that a liquid protein diet program called Optifast had enabled her to shed 67 pounds since July. (1988 article)" Liquid formula diets were introduced two decades ago, but many were sold over the counter and were not medically supervised. At least 60 deaths were attributed to early formulas that had nutritional inadequacies. And while I agree that it has been years being revamped, etc. It is hard to believe like with the Keto diet (which was established for severe seizures), that the loose application of this diet is healthy. Russell Wilder found in 1921 that it was 'good to slow down seizure activity' but also concluded that it also causing brain starvation. We all have to do what is necessary to calm celiac's, I agree, yet I worry about these so called liquid diets and getting enough nutrients unless the person is getting their fruits and veg directly from organic farmers and juicing them within a day of being harvested.
